Lightly Treading, Inc. is a full service building performance design and analysis firm established in 1997. Lightly Treading was founded to educate builders in techniques for constructing green buildings and teach building owners how to enhance the energy efficiency and overall performance of their buildings and homes.
While working as a Grants Manager and Construction Supervisor for Habitat for Humanity (HFH) in 1995-1996, Paul Kriescher, founder of Lightly Treading, observed the fact that simple, decent but “cheap” housing could simultaneously hurt the pocketbook of a family and the quality of the environment. By performing economic analyses and heat-load calculations Paul was able to demonstrate for HFH Metro Denver that the practice of building only to Code, had cost families more than $570/year in added utilities and the environment an extra ~3.6 tons of CO2/year. After he helped HFH Metro Denver increase insulation by 25%, reduce air-leakage by 35%, cut duct-leakage, add Low-e coatings to windows, and incorporate ENERGY STAR lighting and appliances, Paul looked further and saw that for-profit builders were typically doing no better.
Thus a company was born which would be dedicated to builder and homeowner education regarding better material choices, building science practices, and the merits of programs such as ENERGY STAR.
As one of the first companies of its kind, Lightly Treading has continually adjusted and expanded our services to meet the needs of clients. Our team of energy auditors and energy raters serve as third party consultants providing clients with knowledge to take the next step towards energy efficiency.
Our staff comes with a wide range of certifications and skill backgrounds and actively participates in numerous community volunteer efforts. Lightly Treading makes a donation of services to Habitat for Humanity to further its mission of providing simple, decent, affordable housing to individuals and families.
Today Lightly Treading works to educate homeowners, builders, commercial property owners, building science professionals and community members about energy efficiency and improved comfort in new and existing homes and small buildings. Our team specializes in residential home performance assessments including HERS energy ratings, quality assurance and control inspections, electrical audits and energy audits. Lightly Treading conducts energy efficiency workshops and building science trainings and provides consulting services, as well.
Desiring a company name that expressed a commitment to sustainable living, Paul looked back to a beautiful quote from a speech given by Chief Seattle in 1854, as he and his people were being relocated from their lands to a reservation.
“This we know: the earth does not belong to man, man belongs to the earth. All things are connected like the blood that unites us all. Man did not weave the web of life; he is merely a strand in it. Whatever he does to the web, he does to himself.”
Chief Seattle went on to caution the conquering white men to “Tread Lightly” on God’s creation. This quote, as translated, and his cautionary statement spoke to Paul’s vision to be protective of the Environment, not by living a life of austerity and deprivation, but by being conscious of and connected to the beauty, harmony and wisdom of living within nature’s structure and rhythms and – voilà! Lightly Treading was born.

Thank you for all your help. Your company was very helpful with my insulation issues and rebates and I really appreciate it. Definitely will recommend you. Thank you again.
Oh man is there a difference; the home is so much more comfortable! We were concerned at the cost but now we are very happy we did it! Just this morning we noticed how toasty it was when we got up.
Thank you so much. We're super greatful you guys did this audit for us. Please pass along our gratitude.
Britt-Inger & Jeffery, Boulder
I feel a dramatic difference, the sound is down, totally, and I am so much more comfortable I cannot believe it! It was the best thing I ever did! I have never lived in a house that is quiet and comfortable; I never even knew that this was possible! I feel I have privacy now and I did not know I was missing it until now. Before I could not get the temperature lower than 79 degrees in the summer, now I keep on turning the AC up because I am too cold! It is 74degrees in here now; I am amazed at the difference.
Barrett, I was most impressed with the quality of the audit and the follow up report. Thank for the professionalism… my wife and I are most grateful. All in all the entire process was a very fruitful one and you made it happen. Lightly Treading continues to lead the way.
As always you are a wealth of information and a delight! You are so helpful.
I just wanted to say THANK YOU!!!! for all that you have done for our program! The training over the last two days was absolutely fabulous! We have heard nothing but positive feedback from the crew. I also have to say that the demonstration in the home with Paul was one of the coolest trainings I have participated in! Thank you all so much for your time and investment in our program, you have really helped to give the crew some confidence and knowledge when it comes to performing their assessments, and talking about energy use.
Bradie Kiefer, Energy Coordinator, Larimer County Youth Conservation Corps
I have to tell you, your guys found a leak that I have been looking for ten years, we replaced windows, door furnace etc with still the problem. We are now warmer at 63degrees than we were at 70-75 before the improvements, it was amazing!
Barbara, Cherry Hills
There is a real comfort in knowing that there is a contact that is able and willing to help the consumer always in such a professional manner. I can’t say it any way better than this . . . Nancy’s dedicated care made me feel like I was her only “customer” while I know that I am just one of many, many “customers” in the rebate program.
